ABOUT THE BAND

“Fidelity to the source has always been important to me and to us in really everything we do,” says founder and drummer Matt Patterson.

The Beginning

The idea for the band came from two motivations for Matt: as an experiment to see if he was comfortable taking on a bandleader role, and because he thought it would be great fun to play B-52s songs for audiences. Realizing that the Austin music scene didn't already have a B-52s tribute band, Matt went to work immediately. Placing an ad in Craigslist, he received enthusiastic responses from guitarist Trey Buchanan and frontman/"Fred" Corbin Superion in short order.

Corbin Young (AKA Corbin Superion)

lead vocals, rhythm guitar, and percussion

Corbin is both Mock Lobster's own "Fred Schneider" and a singular talent in his own right; his performances are an amalgam of MC/court jester/Zumba instructor!

Corbin has been the charismatic, high-energy frontman of Mock Lobster since its debut in 2017, performing at every single show since. Corbin brings a mix of wit, character and unbridled joy that makes every performance unforgettable. After graduating from the University of North Texas in Denton, Corbin moved to Austin in 2013. He began performing solo and revived his college band. In 2017, fate struck when he answered a Craigslist ad to “audition” for the role of Fred Schneider for a new B-52s tribute band.

“My role on stage is unique in that it’s more of an acting job than a standard singing gig, which I think really solidifies us as a tribute act rather than a cover band,” says Corbin.

Today, Corbin’s Mock Lobster duties go far beyond the stage: he serves as Technical Director, oversees booking and mailing lists and, as a founding member, is pivotal in shaping the band’s creative direction. Offstage, he helps others turn their ideas into songs through music production and private lessons via his production company, Noiserock Treehouse. He is also a key collaborator in Young’s Double-Slit Experiment (2xS), an original sci-fi musical exploring what it means to be human in a post-AI world.

Matt Patterson

drums and percussion

The founder of Mock Lobster, Matt is also a member of several other renowned bands, including Yacht Z and FAB! - Austin's Premier Tribute to The Beatles. His rock-solid and groovy drumming has also supported renowned Texas musicians including Rosie Flores, The Pepperland Players, and Austin's legendary Beatles tribute The Eggmen.

Jenna Trust

vocals and keyboards

Jenna joined the Mock Lobster family as an understudy for the role of "Cindy" in February 2020, and played her first show as a full member in January 2022 at the Pershing East, Austin TX. In addition to using her versatile and powerful voice onstage, Jenna puts her graphic arts skills to work as the band's Art Director, and is instrumental in the wig & costume creation process. Outside of Mock Lobster, Jenna performs in the pop/punk/psychobilly band Chris Toast and the Jerks (Jenna calls their sound "carney-core"), and the above-mentioned 2XS. A self-described “handy person/house painter”, Jenna also works with Austin’s Handyband Collective and is an avid gardener.

Maddy Brotherton

vocals, keyboards, and percussion

Of Mock Lobster's approach to performing B-52s songs. Maddy says: “We’re obsessed with accuracy! ...I get to indulge my perfectionist streak." An Austin local and lifelong B-52's fan, Maddy first joined Mock Lobster as an understudy in late 2019, having been encouraged to audition following a fateful karaoke session at The Common Interest. She made her stage debut with the group at the Continental Club in February of 2020, and stepped into the "Kate" role full time in 2022. Though primarily a violinist, Maddy has relished developing her vocal chops to meet the challenges of Kate and Cindy's idiosyncratic and acrobatic melody and harmony lines. She particularly enjoys assisting the band in learning and refining new material by transcribing the vocal parts by ear to sheet music, and giving close attention to the structural details of each song to enhance the live experience for the most discerning listeners.

Outside of Mock Lobster, Maddy can often be found wielding her violin with a pedalboard in goth rock outfit The Unlimited Stars, playing Irish tunes and songs alongside her father Rich Brotherton in Úlla, and sawing out punk, surf and post-rock headbangers with Moon Medallion.

Trey Buchanan

lead guitar

Trey grew up listening to the B-52s, and became fascinated with Ricky Wilson's unorthodox style, characterized by string-omitting guitar tunings and surf-infused rhythms. His pursuit of that unique sound pays off in the audience response, as Trey describes here:

“Every show there’s some new person who’s there who sings every single song, [and] they’re waiting for whatever that little” – he shimmies his fingers, conjuring the distinct riffs and standout notes that characterize the art-pop band. “And then they light up, and that’s always great to see.”

Additionally: Trey comes by his nickname "Dr. Trey" honestly! He is a retired Professor of Psychology and holds a doctorate in that field.

David Houston

bass guitar and keyboards

David joined Mock Lobster in March 2019, playing his first show with the band (in his kilt!) at Dallas’s iconic Granada Theater. Since then, David has been laying down those groovy rhythms that B-52’s fans know and love. Offstage, David moonlights as Mock Lobster’s Social Media Manager, keeping our lobster community in the loop with all the latest band buzz, gig updates, and backstage shenanigans. With over 30 years in the Austin music scene through songwriting, solo performances, and a wide range of covers and tribute projects, David has become a cornerstone of the tribute band world ("A tribute band giant" according to The Austin Chronicle), showcasing his multi-instrumental talent across a dazzling array of acts including Brass In Pocket - America's Pretenders Tribute Band, FAB! Austin's Premier Tribute to The Beatles, and yacht-rock sensation Yacht Z.

David was named Best Bassist in the inaugural 2024 Austin Tribute Band Community Awards, and was the bassist for Austin's legendary Beatles tribute band The Eggmen.
